University College London

Founded in 1826 as 'London University', it was designed to provide a secular alternative to Britain's other religious universities at Oxford and Cambridge. In 1836 it became 'University College, London', the name it bears today, as has grown into one of the world's leading research institutions. In 1871, in tune with it's progressive history it was the first university to admit women on equal terms to men.
