Columbia
Founded by Royal Charter in 1754, and called King’s College, Columbia University was given it's current name in 1896. It was originally intended to be a New York rival for New Jersey's Princeton, and as both are now recognised as world leading educational bodies it can be said to have achieved this aim. Columbia administers the annual Pulitzer Prize, their School of Journalism, and the prize itself, being founded with money left by Joseph Pulizer.
