Brown was founded in 1764 as the Baptist answer to Congregationalist Yale and Harvard, Presbytarian Princeton and Episcopalian Penn and Columbia, and was the first in the country to accept students regardless of religious affiliation. It was originally called the 'College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations', but changed to its current name in 1804 in recognition of a gift from Nicholas Brown, a businessman and philanthropist.
