Irish Guards

Affectionately known as ‘the Micks’, the Irish Guards were formed in 1900 after several Irish regiments served with distinction in the Boer Wars. Since the Irish Wolfhound Club presented the regiment with a dog in 1902, in an effort to boost the breed’s popularity, the regiment’s mascot has always been such a dog, named after one of the legendary Chieftains or High Kings of folklore.
